I think you might find that those are aphids which suck the sap and eventually kill the plant….a natural enemy of aphids is the lady beetle whereas the ants have a symbiotic relationship….the ants care for the aphids and the aphids excrete a sugary substance which the ants enjoy feeding on. Great close ups and I hope you can get rid of them somehow from your garden.
Very good commentary by Cath – I’ve been trying to get rid of the aphids on my rose tree for a number of years now – this year I’m trying a new method : crushing the aphids with my fingers – again and again every day in the hope that the ants will stop bringing the aphids up there to to feed on my roses.
